Historical Festival Play

Young and old know it – the story of brave Mayor Nusch, who 1631, with his legendary “Master Draught” saved the town form destruction and the councillors from death sentence.

The Historical Master Draught Festival, covers a four day weekend, Friday throughout Monday. Each of these four days is characterized through its own variety of activities. The peaceful city on Friday, the besieged city Saturday, the free city Sunday and the fortunate, happy city on Monday. The heart of all activities is the Historical Play “The Master Draught” by Adam Hörber which premiered in 1881.

The play takes place

in the emperor room in Rothenburg´s townhall. All of the colorful activities, not only the play, are scattered throughout the old town. For instance, on Whitsunday and Whitmonday afternoon historical military parades through the old town, at Galgentor (gallow tower gate) a 17th century bivouac with Bavarian beer garden for the visitors, a historical trader and craftsmen market near the market-place, and much more.

For both Rothenburgers and their guests Whitsuntide is the big event and highlight of the year. The dramatic events of 1631 are performed every year since 1881 in the exciting and suspenseful stage play "Der Meistertrunk - The Master Draught".

For more than a century now, every year splendid pageants, coarse camp life, colourful markets and numerous events enchant the guests from far and near during this weekend.

The perceptable joy and pleasure of the Rothenburgers in organizing their festival with lots of committement and love of detail gives these historic pageants a very special
